we have a bcm 400 [3] removed from a closed office en route to their new one. it is a staight forward bcm with Bri, 32 extns & call pilot. however, after about an hour, the green leds at the front all flash [not power, temp or fan leds] and call pilot fails as does the ability to access the bcm for programming even by the serial port. observing this, the fan [?] co-incidently seems to go into overdrive but this is not a temperature issue.
the terminals still work but, if you plug another in, it won't boot up. in other words, telephony works but everything else fails. only a reboot will get it running again only for it to do this again.
i have tried pulling the bri modules, leaving it off the lan & disconnecting all terminals without altering the end result.
other points of note: when it is running, call pilot goes up & down as does the ability to access telephony programming.
the next stage is to default it - help!
meanwhile, their new office will have another switch entirely!!

Sounds like a base function tray issue (card where the MSC/LAN ports live)

If so, pull out the base function tray and check for any fried capacitors. There is a product bulliten out that addresses this issue. If it was an original 3.0 system, check Nortel bulliten 2003-0305-Global - it outlines the exact vintages of BCM that are affected (and only a small percentage of those have the problem).

Just ran into this same issue a couple weeks back.

i have examined the card and can see no visual damage to any caps.
i can't find the bulletin anywhere.
more details on version: f/w genport ver 1.0; bcm 3.0 rc 2.2; version 4 [4.5]
it is looking like the fault you describe though and seems to trigger after 20-30 mins every time.

If you can get me your email address I can send the bulliten to you - I've been trying to figure out a way to post it here and am not having any luck.

I just talked to our field tech today and he stated that this issue has really spiked in the last month or so with these older BCM 400 systems (he has been called out about 6 times in the last month with the same problem).

The Product Advisement can be found here:

I am very curious as to why this has hit now - two years later in such a broad stroke..

hello again, i looked at the The Product Advisement but my card is not listed [97-9032-02; NT7B1003; A0899482]. however, sashti's post seems to confirm biv343's.

I have a BCM 400 NT7B10AADH where all Green lites as above post and no Comm with system IP LAN, Serial Port and modem don't work. Vmail is down but pnones and trunks work. I have a new rel of the PAA-2003-0305-Global Issue 3 dated 9/29/2003 I got it from biv343

I contacted my vendor and he notified Nortel, Nortels responce was the Discription above does not match the PAA problem, which is Red lit being lite, so open a new case with Nortel. So I guess this is not the same issue as we are having. if anyone has the Bulletin for this problem please list it here.

The PAA bulliten was originally for the red light failure, and there was a "stop ship" on the BCM's for a while when the problem was first identified. At that point, the vendors could request a replacement base function tray on systems that were installed and affected, or not yet installed.

I have not yet seen a bulliten for this "newest" version of the base function tray issue, but I've contacted Nortel several times over the past month for multiple systems, and once you give them the NT number and release of the BCM 200/400 (remember, it had to ship with 3.0/3.01), they'll know what is happening. They have mentioned this bulliten number to me during the RMA process. I have yet to have Nortel give me any other diagnosis.

Some things to look for (this will be questions 4 and 5 that Nortel will ask, after the NT number, release, and manufature date)

1. Green colored capacitors on the base funciton tray
2. Any capacitors that are leaking, ruptured, or otherwise fried.

I had this problem on the weekend, i even tried ghosting the Hd & changing it, but it came back after a couple of hours. i managed to resolve problem by upgrading s ware version & a core upload. Hope this helps!!!
