I can ping the loopback address but I cannot ping the gateway (or anything else). I put in a different network card and even moved it to another pci slot. I cannot get on the network.

open a dos window, run the command "ipconfig" and see if you are even on the same subnet. If not, then you dont either done have DHCP configured or you havent set yourself onto your network.
