Layer Layout problems

Hi,

I wish to create the following in layers:

Bit of text Bit of text Bit of text
Bit of text Bit of text Bit of text
Bit of text Bit of text Bit of text
-------------------------------------
Bit of Text | Bit of Text | Bit of Text |
Bit of Text | Bit of Text | Bit of Text |
Bit of Text | Bit of Text | Bit of Text |

So its basically a long one at the top streching accross the page, then 3 smaller ones below it, each inline with each other.

In layers, as all i get is either the 3 stacking up below the top one, one ontop of each other, or I get all 3 of them in the correct way across but like a stairs going down.

hows it done please?
