it is my understanding that a hub is a modular device that expands a network's data bus connectivity without affecting network or device signaling. I recently tried to simply bridge the wire connections of two network devices. with both devices connected I kill both of them. either, by itself will work fine.what hub function am I not understanding?
 
Are you using a straight Ethernet cable??

If so you need a crossed cable to connect a Pc to a PC or to connect 2 hubs, if there isn't an uplink port.

Crossed cable pin outs as follows..
With the bottom of the connector facing upwards and going from left to right

End 1 End 2
White / Green White / Orange
Solid Green Solid Orange
White / Orange White / Green
Solid Blue Solid Blue
White / Blue White / Blue
Solid Orange Solid green
White / Brown White / Brown
Solid Brown Solid Brown
