The lan card on one of our Aria 250s has stopped working. Menu 22.4 indicates "LAN Card API Status: DOWN".
I Reset the lan card using menu 20.14.8. I then checked the status log and got this entry:

*** LAN Card initialization failed

I don't have an up to date status log manual - Can anyone tell me what this means?

I've tried re-booting and this didn't correct the problem. Based on the meaning of the status log entry will re-seating the card possibly correct the problem?

Can I re-seat the lan card while the sysytem is up?

you can reseat the card, using the same procedures as for the regular FLT's, if that does not work you probably have a bad card

Thank you for your reply jml2665. I wasn't aware the lan card was in card management - or I forgot - I'm not sure;) When I went into card nanagement and the lan card was listed in the inactive cards. I selected slot 8 and re-seated the card. Screen shot:

Looks like a bad card. Thanks again for your help.

It may be a bad fan on the Octel as the lan card will not load
if one of the fans is not running or is slowing down. But if the system was not rebooted then that is not it.

Just a bad lan card. Let me know if i can help

Thank you Ken. I wasn't aware that the fan being slow or not running would cause the LAN card not to run. We do have a fan not running. We re-booted to try to get the LAN card running and the system wouldn't come up. To get the system up I went in to the diagnostics boot and diabled the alarm checking at boot to get the system up. I've reported the fan and LAN card problem to our maintenance vendor and hopefully all that is wrong is a bad fan. I wonder if the failing fan is what caused the repeated problem I've been having with that LAN card. We've had to re-start the LAN API at least once a month since July.

I'll let you know - Thanks again

Warning Number 48 Rev.: A Page: 1 of 1
Product Code(s): Octel 250 Priority Level: 1 Approved: Marty Acker
LAN Card Problem can occur if a Fan Alarm is present on the
Octel 250
Product Warning 48
TO: All Field Service Engineers and Customer Technical Support Specialists
FROM: Avaya Inc., TSO Advanced Technical Support
SUBJECT: The Octel 250 LAN Card fails to load firmware if a Cooling Fan Alarm exists
DATE: September 4, 2002
AFFECTED
SYSTEMS: Octel 250 Voicemail Systems
ISSUE: The LAN card on the Octel 250 will experience a problem loading firmware if the
Octel 250 system has a Fan Alarm as indicated on the 250 Alarm Panel. There
is no indication in Menus 13-2 or 13-8 on the 250 for a fan alarm condition. The
alarm condition can exist if a fan goes bad, or if the fan’s power cable is
unplugged. This condition does not apply to the Octel 350
Note: A running 250 system that experiences a fan failure will not have LAN
card operation immediately affected. The system remains functional
unless the LAN card is reset (Menu 13.11 – Card Management or Menu
20 – LAN Utilities) or replaced, or if the system is rebooted.
If a system experiences a fan failure, replace the fan as soon as possible. If the
LAN card is reset or the system rebooted, network communications will be
unavailable, affecting digital networking, Aria Domain, and other LAN based
applications such as Visual Messenger, or Mobile Path.
Note that booting up a 250 OR 350 system with a “Dead” or missing LAN card
can cause message transmission to become suspended. Since Digital
Networking retries do not occur, the threshold for Fallback to Analog is never
reached. You can return messages to sender, and manually reconfigure
network nodes to analog, until the situation is rectified.

Ken,

Thanks again for your help. The vendor came this morning and had to order a fan. He wants to take the system down to replace it and I'm all for that, but just out of curiosity when we had a fan replaced in our
Miami 250 it didn't need to be shutdown. Does the sytem need to be shutdown to replace a fan?

No it does not and after the fan is replaced you should be able to reset the lan card if the card is not bad.

Sounds like you need a new vender if they don't have a fan in stock ?

Ken Means

Ken,
The fan was replaced as well as the lan card today. The digital networking is back. I was really suprised that they didn't bring a fan with them when I TOLD them the fan was dead. This is pretty typical of this vendor. I won't flame them here, but I really hate paying them for a maintenance contract.
