i got the veritas backup exec installed on the client win2000 pro. pc and installed the remote on the win SBS server. Also installed remote agent on other win2000 pro pc. Ran a backup, looks fine, i see the size it backed up (even though it left out 2 files out of several 100 files it backed up) i also tried to restore one file, and it seems too have done the restore fine, BUT the job status still shows as failed and the percentage shows as unknown. Don't know why?
Therefore i am a little concern.
Is it backing up ok, and if yes why do i at the bottom of the log.txt file it creates see
Job completion status: Failed
Please help.

Without more info I'm gonna point you to this linky,

If you are sure that your setup is good and there are no hardware probs, the you'll want to know that by default backupexec treats any and all corrupt files as a failed job. So what to do? You can edit the registry to bypass this little thing...

thanks that was helpful.

The status will show as failed since the lines in the log file read - and i break them down in 3 sections:-

Backed up 37895 files in 1771 directories.
1 corrupt file was backed up
8 files were in use
1 item was skipped.

File "ACTIVATE.PVX" in use - Backed up.
WARNING: "\MAS90\HOME\LIB\KEYS\ACTIVATE.PVX" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify.
^ ^ ^ ^ ^

Unable to open the item \MAS90\Copy of REPORTS\###-###\SOWFAA1.RPT - skipped.

1)How do the files say in use when i know for sure that those 8 files were not in use during the night backup, and does it still back those files?

2)Why did it skip a file? what's the hash sign? There are no ### sign's in any folder.

3)What does it mean when it read :-
File "BLEND RELEASE.ldb" in use - Backed up.
Did the file back up or not?

4)Should i be concern about the corrupt file?
Did the corrupt file back up or not?

Please respond. Thankful for any help.

:)

1- Hmmm, MAS90 is an accounting package right? Sounds like reports from your database are still in memory. If it says skipped, the file in question wasn't backed up.

2- You can try to lock the file. Normally you don't want that as users may be making changes on the fly, but if its run at night it shouldn't be a problem. You can also try the open file option too.

3- It means the (database? access?) file was in use and was backed up.

4- Theres not much you can do about corrupt files other than finding them as they show up on your logs and fixing them, or editing backupexec to not flag corrupt files as a failed backup.

You may need to install "open file option"
(or atleast ensure that the related applications are closed prior to the backup running). Try logging off (or shutting down) all workstations before the backup runs.

I have encountered data restoration problem using Veritas Backup Exec. My restore job always fails with the following error messages:

An error occurred while scanning the catalogs. The job will not continue.

Please check for the following:

- low virtual memory conditions

- a corrupt or truncated catalog

- that the media you are restoring has not been overwritten

^ ^ ^ ^ ^

The memory of my server is 250MB and the paged size is 23,540KB. So, I suppose it is not a problem to virtual memory condition. But I don't understand what it a corrupt or truncated catalog.

Any pointer?
