IPSEC is a standard, and the BCM actually adheres to that standard. UDP 500 is where the initial communication takes place. ESP uses ports 50/51.
Do a google search for IPSEC ports and you'll get a boatload of sites that will go into enough detail to make you want to jump out a window.
