I run a clan for a game and the clan we are at war with keeps masking there ip and coming back in....can any one help me on this....is there a ip demasker?? or is there someone to tell of it them through the masked ip????

What do you mean? How are you trying to see their mask? What does it report the mask as being?

Burt

Son, you gotta lot to learn...
Having run various gaming servers over the years, I've been in your position on several occasions. Take my advice and make peace with them, 'cause you're gonna lose this battle.

You cannot 'hide' an IP address, you can only change it.

Your only real choice is to keep blocking every IP they connect with. You'll end up blocking whole ranges of addresses.

On a Tribes server I once ran I scripted up a routine that would let me auto-kick players based on their name. True, they could just change names and rejoin, but they hated doing it and would tire of the sport fairly quickly.

I misread the post...get their IP and do a traceroute, or download a packet sniffer (Ethereal is free), and report them to their ISP, and say that they are trying to hack into your FTP server. You can get the phone # of the NOC for their ISP with the IP address by doing a domain lookup at

That's poor advice in this situation. Are you going to fake the FTP logs?

Besides, at the very worst you'll get their ISP to drop them. They'll be signed up with another ISP within minutes, and then they'll be out to take your server down.

You're going to lose this battle. Make peace.

well we just need to figure out this one guys ip so we can find out were he lives and ban that area......which has worked previously for us.....also there is no making peace with these people..they dlted all are posts in our forums......its total war....but it is only one person from there clan that is bothering our forums the rest of there clan is mature they still hate us but at least they follow rules.....also this is on invision free and do you think if we contacted the owners that they could perm ban him??? because it is against one of there board rules......

His IP is logged by every server he connects to. Since you're obviously not running your own servers, complain to whoever is running your servers.

Total war? Get a grip, it's only a game.

So you think his ip will resolve to his street address? lol ... someone has been watching too much tv.

no it will tell me wat state he lives in and i will ban the whole state......

IP addresses aren't assigned on a state by state basis, geee that war must be something else.

Sorry for the sarcasm...let them "win"...they will always lose to Karma.

Burt

most ips will tell you were they live......but the thing is i don't see how it is so hard to take the ip he is masking find it out and ban it.....it is ridiculous wat people will go through to make people miserable. so there really isn't any help here but give up??? and have him still rampage our forums.....

He's not "masking an IP", there's no such thing.

Contact the people hosting your forum.

This guy is doing this because it pisses you off. Stop being pissed off by it, and he will move on. This is the quickest, surest solution to your problem. I've been there, man.

there is no such thing as masking a ip??? but then how does he change it from his real one??? i thought that was masking.....

Spoofing, I believe is the term that LawnBoy is thinking of, but there is software out there to spoof your IP address. Masking it would assume to hide it, but your adversary seems to make his IP address different from what it is, which is sort of spoofing it, though true IP spoofing is for attacks on a network and making it look like it's coming from somewhere else.

Here is something that will do it...

Burt

If its some online forum site, he is just using a proxy. There are endless open proxies so as its been suggested you should just make piece.

... and there are also 'man-in-the-middle' attacks. What I'm trying to say is that in a data packet, there is no mechanism to have one address hidden by another address, and therefore no technique to 'unhide' the 'real' address.

If there was such a technique it would render proxy servers useless.

I'm with everyone on this one. Just make peace. As brianinms points out, using proxy servers is easy. So is getting a different IP. Depending on "the war-monger's" ISP and setup, he could very easily just release and renew his IP.

You can't tell a physical location for a person per say. You can find out the location of his ISP, but that doesn't necessarily mean he is in that state. For example, roadrunner, who seems to have a large address space, will report Virginia, as it's home state. Since some ISP's don't allow looking past the address space, I would think you are pretty much out of luck.
