When is a RUK kit needed for an Intuity Upgrade?

Can you perform a RUKless upgrade from a MAP40 r3 1-55 to
a MAP5?

It's just an external scsi drive. If your old system uses 1 type of removable media (say an SLR tape) and your new system uses something else (maybe a jaz or magneto optical), you need a ruk kit.

RUKless is the prefered way nowdays. There is a chart that Avaya has that tells the tech what upgrades can be done via RUKless.

For RUKless, you take the optical drive out of the new box and put it in the old one. Save to the magneto optical disc, swap the drive back and restore. That's basically it, but there are very detailed instructions that you should follow.

Here's two links for you.
