InstallShield Express and VFP 5?

We were hoping to use the InstallShield Express that comes with VFP 7 to install our VFP 5 application (long story as to why we haven't upgraded to 7,8 or 9 yet!). But when I go to Objects/Merge Modules, it only lists VFP 7 Runtimes. Am I SOL?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi

Check on this FAQ... Probably you would want alternate ways..
How do I create a custom SetUP for my application?

Lochness30,

In theory, you can use InstallShield Express to install applications with any version of the VFP runtime. But as you found, the problem is that there are no merge modules for the VFP 5.0 (or 3.0 or 6.0) runtime files.

You can get round it by explicitly adding the files to the Systems directory. You do that in the Files page in ISE. You will have to identify the required DLLs in the upper pane, and drag them to the System directory in the lower pane. Then, right-click on the files in question, choose Properties, and look for an option to register the files on the target system.

I'm sorry I don't have the exact details to hand, but I am working away from my usual system today. I hope you can figure it out. (Or, of course, you could always use the dreaded VFP 5.0 Setup Wizard instead.)

Mike,
Minor correction - InstallShield (or maybe it was Microsoft) did provide a VFP 6.0 SP5 merge module for a short time, but I believe they pulled it when they had people asking for the other 5 versions of 6.0 and the 4 for VFP 5.0! Since 7.0 and 8.0 have only had one SP each, these 4 "versions" were easier to keep track of.

Actually I did some more digging and found out the install sheild lets you install to the user's %systemfolder%. So all I had to do was put the vfp500.dll and others in there.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully this thread will help others using good ol' VFP5!

True, but you still need to get ISE to register it on the user's system (at least, that's my understanding).

Yes, that MM is good if you are using the Visual Studio (VS) Installer, but I don't think it works with ISE.
