Inserting CSS into an XML document

Hello. I have created an XML document using PHP's DOM write command and now I would like to format the XML by adding a CSS insert statement at the top of the file. I cannot seem to find anywhere how to append the file with PHP so that my XML looks pretty. My class has been stuck on this problem for two weeks now so any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
