I've installed Windows XP and IE6 onto my PC and have got an annoying problem. I first noticed it when my javascripts to open a new window containing a webpage wouldn't run. The new browser window opens but the page doesn't load. An error box pops up in the background stating something along the lines of Error: The specified module could not be found. Debugging shows the line starting window.open -------highlighted. I therefore assumed this was related to javascript specifically but have also noticed the problem when right-clicking on links and trying to open them in a new browser window and also hyperlinks that by default open new pages. I've tried repairing IE6 and removing and starting from scratch but for reasons of a previous version of Windows been present cannot. I assume this is registry related but not sure where to begin. Any ideas???

Did you install XP over an existing OS, or did you do a clean install?

If you installed over another OS, this might be the problem. I never recommend installing over the exisiting OS, it only causes headaches. Nate Gagne

You guessed it, I should have known better but I did install onto a drive that already had a copy of Windows 2000 on. I did however change the installation folder to c:\winxp so xp is seperate to the c:\winnt folder where 2K is installed. It's only a 120 day trial of XP so I didn't want to completely remove 2K from the system

also;

I've noted that explorer has no problems when clicking on hyperlinks in an email message. The browser window opens and the page is loaded fine.

SOLUTION

I found the relevant solution in Microsoft KB article Q281679.

Hope this helps anyone who encounters the same problem
