Hi, I've got a little problem that someone will hopefully know the solution to. MOST of the icons on my desktop and in the control panel are just showing up as a black box. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to which ones are showing up and which aren't. I can't think of anything I did to create this. I recently installed a couple simple "post-it note" programs but then uninstalled them. I can't imagine they have something to do with this? Aside from the icons not showing up properly, everthing works fine. I used tweakui and rebuilt the icon cache but that only seemed to make more icons dissapear. Here's something else...when you click once on an icon it highlights and you can see the original icon in sort of a lighter shade.

Does anyone have ANY idea what's going on here and how to fix it? Icons such as "my computer" "scheduled tasks" "internet explorer" some desktop folder shortcuts AND folders and most of the control panel icons are not showing up.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Hi,

You need to delete the ShellIconCache file in c:\windows.

Its a hidden file, so make sure you are looking at all files in exlporer.

Or just reboot to a dos prompt, change to the c:\windows folder.

and type

attrib -h shelliconcache - then hit return
del shelliconcache - hit return

Now reboot the machine and the icons should be back to normal.

Paul
