Hi,
I am trying to get .htaccess password protection going on part of my webpage. I get prompted with the box to enter my username and password to the protected area. I enter the username and password and get into the protected area. However the next time I go to access the protected area I am not prompted for the username and password instead I am taken straight into the protected area. What is the cause of this and how do I stop it?

Hi,

When you login with .htaccess the login details are stored in your browser. The reason why you are not asked for these details again is because your browser remembers them. If you want to clear these details from your browser you'll need to close your browser window. Then next time you will be asked to login again!

You can't make your browser "forget" these details without closing the browser window, at least now without some effort.

Hi,
i tried the workaround whereby you create a logout directory and place a dummy .htaccess and .htpasswd file in it, and then create a logout hyperlink containing the path to the logout directory and the username and password stored in the .htpasswd file. However this fails to clear the username and password to my protected area. Closing and reopening the browser also fails to clear the username and password. My logout link is shown below:

so far the only thing I find that clears things is to reboot the machine. Any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

Cheers,

Paddy:)
