Having reinstalled XP etc and reinstalled the scanjet software XP no longer 'sees' the scanner. Trying 'add hardware' does not help.

Any ideas?

If the scanner is USB, then was it and the software installed exactly per the instructions. Sometimes a USB device has to be connected during the software installation.

Make sure the USB controller is enabled in BIOS.
If ok, then check for any problems with the USB controller in Device Manager. If so, then make sure the MB's chipset drivers are installed.
If things are ok in Dev. Mgr., then see if it works on a different USB port. If not, then see if another USB device works. If not, then make sure SP-2 is installed. If so, then the USB hub may be bad. A USB PCI controller can be installed as a work around.
If another USB device works ok, then try the scanner on a different system. If no good, then it may be bad.

I have a HP4200 'C' scanner that also quit functioning with the can't find scanner device error. Unfortunately, I had no joy in getting it setup. Tried w98, w98se, wme, w2K, and XP all with no joy. As I required scanning on a tight schedule I purchased another scanner that installed without a hitch.
So the USB bus was not at fault, and I really never looked back to determine the exact malfunction.
HP support was not helpful.

I know that this does not get your HP scanner connected but there are times where your time is more valuable than the cost of a replcement.
