hello,

we are running the most current version of legato and on our old version, Legato networker skipped backing up SQL db thru enterprise manager. Since we upgraded I am seeing in the enterprise manager the databases being frozen and thawed and the event viewer is showing legato backing up the databases.

How does one get legato to not do this? we have 200+ servers and I need this for just one box.

thanks

Sounds like the VSS writer is backing up the database as part of the regular client backup.

You need to disable the VSS writer for MSDE on the client properties

VSS:MSDEWriter=off

and this excludes just SQL but will backup the rest of the box?

This is not an easy answer without knowing your client setup. It is best practice to have 2 client resources - one for the file backup, one for the DB backup. If you just remove the DB client from the group, this will already be sufficient.

Hi, if you want to use the VSS feature for the rest of your file system backup without backing up the SQL database files just create a directive for your file system backup client ressource.
The content of this directive for example should be:
<< "C:\program files\sql" >>
+skip: *.*

where the path is the path to the SQL database files.

directive? what's that?

I gave the link to this thread to our network admin and we removed the db client last night and have our fingers crossed for backup tonight.

thank you everyone so much for your help. this has been driving me nuts and i have been driving the poor admin nuts over it so i am sure his sanity will be thankful too.

jinkies, legato still backed SQL up last night.

so anywhere else to look? It isnt doing SQL maintenance and I recall on our old system we had to put a couple of switches on something to get it to stop.

What about if you start to state core information of the client's setup so that someone is capable to help?

Sorry for the delay in follow up...

This is a VSS issue. With 7.4.2, licensing has changed so that you no longer need a VSS license to backup the additional VSS savesets from all the writers available on that particular client.

In this case, you are backing up the SQL database using the MSDE Writer. Remember in 7.3 and up where you used to disable the VSS errors by putting VSS:*=off in the client properties of that client. That option disables all of the VSS writers. In this case we don't want to do that, but only to disable the MSDE writer. You only need to do this on the client that is running the database.

So, do this...

On the apps and modules tab of the client in question...
In the save operations box put: VSS:MSDEWriter=off

If that doesn't work use VSS:*=off

this should solve your problem, as you stated the DB was being frozen and thawed. This is are VSS opreations and terminology.
