how to enable shell history in AIX 5

Dexter,
Your command history should be automatically written to that file; .sh_history.... Have you tried just doing a more on the file?
#more .sh_history
by doing that you should be able to view the history of the shell..

Are you using ksh? The older bourne shell doesn't support history. HTH.
