Ok we used to use word 2003, i have changed 10 personel to word 2007.

When they go into their folders to open a documents that was in 2003 it is not there! if i change the drop down to see 2003 documents then all the 2003 documents are there except 2007 disapear. This also happens in the save as mode.
this only happens if you use word 2007 to open documents in the program.
If i go into the folder outside of word i can see all the documents if they are in 2003 or 2007.

Is there a way/option of seeing ALL documents in the OPEN/SAVE option whilst in word 2007!!! im getting jip from my headteacher because he thinks he has lost his documents!!!

maybe try - Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats

We just changed over to 2007 as well. Big fun. [wink]

It sounds like your Word is defaulting to save new documents in the new 2007 format, .docx, rather than the old format of .doc.

Go to Office Button > Word Options > Save and change Save files in this format to Word 97-2003 Document (.doc).

Now everything is saved in the legacy format.

thanks again i wish to save as 2007.. its the open/save problem inside office 2007 try it you will see save the same doc in a folder one as 2003 the other 2007 you will see when you open that document only 1 will show until u use the dropdown, the boss wishes to see all his documents inside that folder..

.doc <> .docx

What you're describing has been the normal behavior in all versions of Office as far back as I can think of.

For example, with Excel 2003, if you were to save a workbook as .xls, then save a file as .xla in the same folder, you wouldn't see the previously saved .xls files.

You only see other files of the same extension as the one you're saving.

And .doc is not the same file extension as .docx.

So your options are to save as 2003 style (as I previously suggested), update all of his old 2003 files to .docx or tell him to be patient.... As more .docx files are saved, more will be visible by default when he selects Save As.

as long as you have BOTH 2007 and the former, ALL saved flies ought to be in the the FORMER VERSION, IMHO.

FYI, my wife has 2007 and regularly has to pass files to "the outside world." As a matter of practice, she saves ALL her Word, Excel & PowerPoint a ver 97-2003.

In my version of Word 2007 when I click on the Office button and click "open" I can change the "files of type:" dropdown box to "all Word documents". This gives me *.doc, *.dot, *.docx, *.docm, *.dotx, etc.

Once I change to this option and open a file then, if I close the file using the Office button ->close and exit Word using the Office button ->exit, the next time I go to open a document in Word all Word documents show regardless of file extension.

Also, if I open a .doc in Word 07 it automagically opens in "compatibility mode" and saves as a .doc file unless I use "save as" and save it as a .docx file.

Cheers.
