i have an HP laptop that my daughter is having problems with. i tried doing a repair install - no joy.

anyway, i am running some utilities from my UltimateBootCD for Windows and the processor temp is @ 45C. Is that running hot and could it be causing the problems with the hdd?

What are the symptions that it is haveing.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

well it was slow to not moving at all unless you rebooted but, now it is officially dead!

did a disk analysis on it and there were so many damaged blocks that after the report it would not even recognize any existing hdd.

time for a new one. but the question still remains, could or is the temp a possible cause and will it happen again if it is?

Depends what processor is - but 45C is well within tolerance for may processors. I doubt this caused your problem - hard drives do die sooner or later.
