I have a question. I want to know what are the steps to reduce the space of one partition and used it to grow another partition.

I used smit but it displayed the following message..".Cannot reduce size of file system."

I really need to grow the other partition but when i try to grow using smit, it display that there was not enogh space....

I appreciate your help, greetings

To reduce the size of a filesystem, you will need to back the filesystem up, remove the filesystem, rebuild the LV and the filesystem with the smaller size, and then restore the backup.

To be a bit clearer, if the partition is in the rootvg, you can take a full system backup, then you need to restore from that backup, but in doing so, select the 'shrink filesytems' option.

This will create all the filesystems just as large as they are required to fit the data in them. Any left over partitions will be unallocated and you can share them out accordingly.

You will need to balance your available space through all the filesystems again, but you should have freed up enough to do what you wish.

That was the basic response... if you want the fully detailed step by step guide, just shout.

If the partition is in rootvg, the steps above must be taken if the filesystems is a core O/S filesystem. For example, /tmp, /, /usr, /var, /home. If the filesystem you are working with is NOT one of the above, you can just back up the one filesystem, delete it and recreate.

I mandate that no user filesystems are created in rootvg on our systems. In past jobs however, I have found this to not be the case.

Regards, Bill.
