I create a smooth gradient in photoshop 7, and save it as a high quality jpeg, but when I view it in my browser (IE6) or even in paintshop, it shows up with visible color bands instead of a smooth transition. Then I reload the jpeg back into photoshop and it still displays as a smooth gradient.

How come photoshop can display it smoothly while the browser can't? I have my display using 16 bit color so that shouldnt be the problem. I've posted the file at if anyone wants to see it...

Any ideas? thanks...

Hi,

What browser are you using? I see it just fine in Internet Explorer 6, have you tried changing your display up to 32 bit to see if it's your browser or not or if it is in fact your screen color depth.

Hope this helps!

Well apparently the problem was the color depth, because in the windows control panel, I increased the depth from 16 to 32 bit, and only after refreshing the browser (IE6) did the color bands smooth out.

The funny thing is that photoshop was able to show the smooth gradient BEFORE I switched from 16 to 32 bit color, whereas the other apps (paintshop, IE6) required the setting to be 32 bit color.

Which further emphasizes my question: how is photoshop able to show 32 bit colors when the display is set for 16 bit color depth? Since many people run 16 bit color, shouldnt photoshop display the colors accurately for the display settings?

Maybe photoshop bypasses the windows display settings & somehow talks straight to the video card or something?
