I have been struggling with BE for a couple of weeks now. I have tried giving myself the opportunity to figure things out on my own, and I have to a degree, but I cannot go on without nightly backup (I have been backing up manually before I leave the office - not fun).

I am able and have learned to:
1. Define media sets
2. Label media and associate them to sets
3. Define backup jobs
4. Schedule jobs properties
5. Run jobs manually

I started with three jobs:
1. Backup exchange server - override data do not eject
2. Backup DC servers - append data do not eject
3. Backup couple other servers (web, file share) - append and eject

Each set to send me an email. Job 1 was scheduled to start at 8:00 PM but no later than 11:59 PM. Job 2 was scheduled to start at 10:00 PM but no later than 11:59 PM and job 3 was scheduled to start at 1:00 AM but no later than 6:00 AM.

None of them ever worked. They fail saying that the time window expired (or something like that) ... I do not understand it, if I run the jobs manually, they finish within 30 minutes each.

What do you think may be the cause of this problem?

Thank you all in advance for your assistance!

What day(s) of the week are they scheduled to run on?

DTracy,

They are scheduled to run Mon - Fri.

I have finally gotten it to work. It appears that the problem was with the media themselves not being set properly for override ...

I did (for each tape):
(1) Ran Inventory Job
(2) Labeled Media - which in turn erases media
(3) Changed media property to LTO(2) ...
(4) Associated media to a media set

I then made sure that the media set (Daily) is set to protect for 6 days and to append indefinitely.

I scheduled a single job to backup my Exchange Server - The job starts and finishes within 30 minutes.

One thing, every morning when I remove the tape from drive, insert new tape and run an Inventory Job so that it knows that there is a media in the device.

How can I schedule an Inventory Job?

Regards,

Go to the Devices tab. On each library slot, right click and select invebtory. In the next window, in the left pane, you'll see "schedule". Click on that, and set up the inventory job just like a regular job.

As an alternative if you're on a tape library:
I have 2 tape libraries. Each day, I take out the previous BU job tape, and leave the slot empty. On Mon, I fill all the slots with new tapes, and I have the entire library inventoried at one shot. Just right click the library itself, and select "inventory" just like a slot.
