Dear Mr./Ms AlquestTech,
Thank you so much for taking the time to attempt to assist me in finding a solution to my quandary! I must apologize as it seems that I must have been unclear in the description of my problem as you seem pretty darn smart and yet seemingly unclear as to source of my dis-ease.
So, let me reiterate (maximum verbosity ON).
First: If I attempt to initiate a NEW call using the “hands free” function, i.e., the thing you hold in your hand (the hand set) is in the cradle (the part that holds the thing you hold in your hand) and no buttons have been pressed and there is no noise coming from the speaker that is like in the phone but like not part of the thing you hold in your hand, by pressing what is suppose to be the “hands free” key, I get dial tone. (Mr./Ms AlquestTech would of course have been correct in their oh so witty response had the symptoms stopped here) However, if I attempt to dial ANYTHING the LCD reads “No Line Selected”.
As stated above in my original posting – All of the M7310 stations connected to this 6X16 have six (6) C.O. (central office) telephone lines programmed to appear and ring on each of them. If I depress one of the keys, that I have attached the appropriate little green line designation button to, in this case the little green button labeled “line 1”, I receive Bell (telephone company) dial tone and can dial a telephone number belonging to someone far away, like three cities away even! So there are outbound C.O. lines available and in as much I can pick up the thing you hold in your hand and dial another extension, but not like extension 21 cause that’s the extension I am playing with, but like extension 27, (that’s Julia’s extension… she’s fricken HOT!!!) her phone will ring, so it would be my guess that I have the ability to call Julia if I wanted to, (like she’d give me the time of day…) So, from this extension I have the ability to make an internal call as well as an external call using the hand set (ummm… yeah the thing you hold in your hand), except if I try to do it immediately after depressing (momentarily pushing) what is suppose to be the “hands free” key, without lifting the thing you hold in your hand from the place that holds the thing you hold in your hand, I can not dial an extension within the office or a telephone number external to the phone system.
Second: If I am on a call, holding the thing you hold in your hand, up to my ear (aural orifice), no matter if I am calling a number external to this office (like my grandma’s house, who I dearly miss since she died) or (like in my dreams) Julia’s extension, and I momentarily depress what is suppose to be the “hands free” key the person to whom I am speaking with, on the thing you hold in your hand, which I am holding up to my ear, GETS PUT ON HOLD AND I GET NEW DIAL TONE.
Now, I have only been working in IT for 20 years and no one knows better than me that “I don’t know what I don’t know”! And having been working in IT for 20 years, I could be a little behind in the times. Why I can remember when phone actually RANG! I mean the dang things actually had bells in them and they RANG! I think that that might be where the term “I think the phone is “RINGING”” came from! Who would’a thunk. But I digress… To my way of thinking if I am on call, holding the thing you hold in your hand, up to my ear, and I am talking to some cute girl, and I press what should be the “hands free” key so that both my hands are free to… ahemmm, ummm… I should be able to set the thing you hold in your hand, in the part of the phone that holds the thing you hold in your hand, and continue to talk to the party to who I am speaking with through the microphone that is built into the telephone, but not like part of the thing you hold in your hand, and I should be able to hear the voice of the person to whom I am speaking magically emanate from the speaker that is in the phone but like not part of the thing you hold in your hand. I think that is the very definition of “Hands free” ONE CAN CONTINUE THEIR CONVERSATION WITH THEIR “HANDS FREE” TO DO WHATEVER.
If I press what is suppose to be the “hands free” key and get dial tone but can not dial a number and thus can not speak to the party to whom I wish to speak, then I don’t think, that I have what Mr./Ms AlquestTech so aptly defined as “handsfree” functionality, I just have dial tone. That and $6.00 will get me a beer in just about any bar in here in San Francisco but it ain’t gonna make my customer very happy.
As I said above, I’ve only been doing this for 20 years, and I don’t know what I don’t know. That’s why I have come, hat in hand, to the oracle of all norstar knowledge in the universe, TEK-TIPS, to find the answer… Am I right or am I wrong??? Can I get a Amen!!!
Third: If I attempt a "button query" ([function] *0) and press the afore mentioned "hands free" button (on a representative M7310 - the lowest key on the right hand column of keys (the right hand is the the hand you hold your can o’ Budweiser in) the LCD (that’s the little window that has letters and numbers in it, just above the buttons that Mr./Ms AlquestTech might use if they wanted to call, ummm… some stand up comedian school, it shows the station extension number. If I am not mistaken it is an "intercom" key that reports the station number using the “button inquiry” function.
Again I apologize for being remiss in my original posting regarding my current problem. I always try to give as much information as possible when posting questions keeping in mind that this is a group of professionals who are adept at understanding the scope of a problem, such as mine, using terms appropriate to the technology, while at the same time trying to keep the posting brief (quick and to the point) so that I don’t take too much of your valuable and MUCH APPRECIATED time. I realize that my rather verbose and parenthetical description might be difficult to read but I hope that some of you might get a chuckle, even Mr./Ms AlquestTech.
