i got an interesting procedures on how to recover corrupted filesystem (FS).

unfortunately, i have one question to/for confirmation.

is it always safe to destruct /dev/hd8 (logform) after you did "fsck" each umounted FS?

i believe for now, that it's the only solution i have to try got to cleanup/recover corrupted /tmp & /var FSs as i'm not able to successfully backup the system using mksysb.

any clear explanation (based from actual experience, other than IBM website) will be very "highly appreciated".

Jon,

In you situation normally JFS log corruptions occur as the inability to mount filesystems. If you have unmounted and fsck'd the filesystems in my opinion you will be safe to reformat hd8. I have done this perhaps 100 times over my career and never had any problems.

I agree with PSD...however....once you unmount and fsck you
can reformat the jfslog....

so usually you fsck -y the lvs first
then you run logform once with yes to destroy
to reformat the log....

most of the rootvg lvs share one jfslog? so once your reformat it with the
logform command, it is reset...........

It sounded like you were talking about running logform multiple times after each fsck.........sorry if you weren't . I just wanted to be sure you knew....
fsck -y the lvs, the run logform on hd8 and you are reset....

And We are talking service mode here right? Since it is /var and /tmp

thanks to both of you.

PSD - it cheers me up! for almost a week, 'been contemplating if i'm gonna do the procedures. i've never done it before and the system is so BIG (in terms of applications that are running, and the co can't afford to wait for me to do it in one whole day).

you're right aixqueen, i'll be in the service mode (shutdown -m). but i'll be doing the "logform /dev/hd8" once after i finish fsck'd all FSs.
