Hey there

Having a little trouble with my mac. was capturing some video using Final Cut Pro. I changed tape and I got the little 'new tape you may wish to chage the reel setting' message but when I hit ok nothing happened. I then tried to do a force quit from the apple menu. Nothing happened. I then tried to restart nothing happened. The menu froze on screen so I have the apple menu dropped down frozen and fcp frozen even the time has frozen. The mouse moves but that is all.

I held down the power button for a few seconds to do a restart and restarted in safe mode and it seemed to load fine. I reset the permissions using the disk utility and then rebooted only to have the same thing happen.

Any ideas about what I can try next?

Thanks

Richard

There are plenty of reasons for a lock up like this. A Final Cut Pro forum may be a good place to ask.

See that your hard drives have enough space and are defragmented. A fragmented drive can give plenty of odd behaviour when attempting a DV capture. Disk Utility does not handle defragmentation so another tool is needed (such as iDefrag).

If you have a spare external firewire drive, try connecting that and assigning it as a usable drive in FCP.

Two things you can try:

Reset PRAM: Shut down machine. Start up holding down the Command, Option, P, R keys until you hear a second startup chime.

Start up from the OS install cd or dvd and run disk utility from that to diagnose and repair the hard drive if necessary. As the previous person said, make sure you have plenty a free space on you hard drive or you could run into problems.

Using OSX 10.3.9 & 10.4.11 on a G4, G5 & Intel Macbook
