Format Painter problem - pastes text?

In MS Word 2003 SP2, I use the Format Painter to clean up documents and get some consistency without having to deal with styles.

However, in some situations, when I use the Format Painter, it pastes in a chunk of text! The text is not from the existing document though it appears to be from a previous version of the document. This is from a template I use a lot and it actually seems to be related to a particular position in the template.

There is no hidden text in the document. There is no uncolored or white text in the document. Tracking is on but turning tracking off and accepting all changes has no effect.

Not a killer problem, just strange behaviour. It is easy enough to delete the extra text but it just drives me nuts because I don't understand it. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. THanks in advance!

It sounds like your template includes a style that incorporates text. For example, a style might include numbering and the word "Chapter" or something like that.

Regarding your not wanting to deal with styles, you really, really should re-think that.

Ditto Lillabeth. You should really really really really re-think that. Word is designed around styles. In terms of format, it is where the true power (and functionality) of Word lies.

Thanks, I will check that. That makes sense. I didn't realize that you could create a style with text.

I do appreciate all the discussion about styles and the need for styles. I normally use styles. But this is a template that I inherited and it is a horrible mess. I should probably take the time to start from scratch.
