I have a form of clients details. Each client has a Client Number. When I open the form it is designed to open blank in all fields. However if I type in an existing Client Number the rest of his details do not automatically fill the fields. I assumed they would do. Can anyone explain why? The form has subforms and they fill out correctly with the clients subform details.

Sounds like you are entering the data in a new blank record.

Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during a root
canal? He wanted to transcend dental medication.

What you want to do is click the cursor in the client number field and then hit the search spyglass icon to search for that number. (Or ctrl-F for Find) Simply entering the number into the form is creating a new record, as suggested above. If it's an autonumber field, it won't let you do that, anwyay. Good luck!

A more appropriate question would be why did you assume this would happen?

Well missingling over and over we hear the piece of advice “Don’t make assumptions!”
What a grossly over-simplistic piece of trite. We all make assumptions every second of every day. If we had to test every single assumption, we would be rendered hopeless. Is that really your boss, or is it an identical twin? Is it really Monday, or have you been in a coma for 20 years? Are the traffic lights really going to stay red for long enough to cross the road? Is that tiger really going to eat me - perhaps it really just wants to be friends. We can only survive by making continuous assumptions.

A key aspect of intelligence is being able to fill in the partial facts we know about the world with intelligent assumptions.

So, ignore this piece of advice. Make assumptions when assumptions are called for!

You really ought to think about switching to decaf! My question was completely reasonable! You said you assumed the fields would be filled in automatically and I asked why did you assume this? Because you'd written code to make the form retrieve a record when you entered the Client Number? Because you've seen another database exhibit similar behavior? Because you've read somewhere that Access could do this? It makes a difference in how I or anyone else, for that matter, addresses your problem.

The way you present the question makes it sound like you have some reason for assuming this. If missingling had not asked why, then I would have.
Technically, your question is "Why is my assumption wrong?".
