Just wondering how many fonts are too many fonts to have installed on ur computer - i have quite a few ready to install and wanted to know if there are disadvantges to having lots of fonts installed??
Thnx
Hmm.. I have heard a few stories... I think that Photoshop cant handle more than 400.. or at least view them in your font list within Photoshop. Something like that. I remember I installed about 1000 fonts and Photoshop would only show me up to the G's in my font list. So, I got Extensis Suitcase and used that as my font browser and turned on only the fonts I wanted to use. Depending on your OS your computer may act differently. My Mac did not act any different having all 1000+ fonts installed in my fonts folder but like I said, Photoshop would not let me view all of them. PC's may be different but we have about 500 - 600 fonts on our PC here and it seems to work fine.
If you did install all the fonts, some operations would suffer, not least just trying to scroll through the list to find that one font. Use a font manager (like twitchosx I use Suitcase, highly recommended). That way you can keep most of your fonts in another folder, and only activate the ones you need. You can also create 'sets' that make sense to you, making it easier to find the font you need.
Running Windows ME I had over 1000 fonts installed and it worked fine. When I went to Windows 2000 Pro I installed them all and photoshop froze when opening everytime and gave me an error that it couldn't open. It was because of the volume of fonts. I reduced the fonts and PS worked fine.
I have heard 500 fonts should be max, there aren't really that many variations in fonts anyway. So many are so similar that there is no point have duplicate versions that are slightly off. Everytime PS loads it loads all the fonts and errors can sometimes occur when you have too many.
Hope this helps!
