I have two machines, one running XP home and the other running XP pro. Both machines will not hold the folder view (Icons) for the control panel. I set it to View Icons, but as soon as I close it and reopen it the view is back to Details. Any one have this problem and know how to fix it?

PS - Remember each folders view is checked.

try opening the control panel (set the view how you want it but before you close control panel) at the top go to Tools > Folder Options > View > Apply To All Folders; this will also set all your folders to that specific view that you set in control panel.

Thanks for the reply guys. I tried TweekUP and changed the number of folders from 400 to 5000. That did not work. I then went to the Microsoft site per the link above and used the Fix It for ME option. That did not work. Lastly, I went to the registry per the instructions on the MS Site and did a manual reg edit to change the file limit to 5000 and that did not work either.

Maybe it just is not worth pursuing. It use to work and now it does not. Frustrating for sure.

Like I said, it is my opinion that it is an unsolvable bug that has eluded any solution for generations of Windows, and still does.

You may find yourself living with the "bug" until next time you reinstall the operating system.

This is a Vista thread but it is an interesting read with scattered references to XP. It wont be too long (I bet) before we see similar postings about Windows 7.

Remember Folder Settings (FINALLY Works!)

I really hope I don't sound like a raving moron here, but have you checked the check boxes -

Remember each folders view settings

Restore previous folder windows at login?

Start --> Control Panel --> Folder Options --> View

Just thought I would mention it, if nothing else was working. Sorry if it was a waste.

Been there, done that. No change.

Hi Dom606,

If you are on a domain, have you checked your neighbor to see if the condition is growing?

The point I'm trying to make is Group Policy and or permissions.

Thanks and regards,
David.
