I have a folder from hell. I have tried to delete it from command prompt and nothing. There is nothing in the folder just a ' ' for the folder name. I googled folder from hell and all I could find were suggestions for macs. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this thing?

Thanks!

you could try scheduling a check disk with fix errors from the disk properties/tools tab. This will require you to reboot the computer to allow checkdisk to run. You might be able to delete the directory after boot up, if it has not already disappeared.

does it live on the desktop?
there was a piece of adware that would install a folder on the desktop that would never go away (even when the adware was removed)

OK where is the folder and is it nested under multiple folders with long names?

what was the folder associated with?
what version of XP are you running?...this can be important if you need to take ownership of the file.

this is a great program I use (free)

this one works well but the free version is gone now

I know that it is not spyware. The folder is on the C drive and it was created from one of my installer tests that had an empty variable. The message is "Cannot remove folder : The directory is not empty". I am using XP Pro SP2.
Thanks for the suggestions. Right now I have been able to move it to the trash but I still can't delete the file. I might have to just live with it.

That sounds a lot like a rootkit. Download and run this program and post the scan results on here.

Also a good program as well to add to the others shown here for removing stubborn files and folders. Its called unlocker. Theres also another popular one known as killbox. Ill list both below.

Unlocker

Killbox

Using rootkitrevealer it shows the files as Hidden from API only. I have the files in the Trash so I guess I should be happy that they are out of the way for now. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Next time you are in Safe Mode you could try deleting it from the Recycle Bin.

Having a serious problem need expert help. Okay so my printers that are installed will not show up, and when I click on add printer nothing happens. I know this sounds like a somewhat common problem. I have searched for a fix for this for several days now, nothing seems to work. as an added problem I discovered that when I am looking at my services and I click on one an error message with a yellow triangle and and ! in the middle of it pops up with no message only an ok button to click on. I think this is a result of a recent trojan I think I removed from my system. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this with out reformatting?

"Cannot remove folder : The directory is not empty".

Does the folder have any hidden files? Do 'Show Hidden Files and Folder' (Folder Options -> View) to see if there are any files.

JMcHugh1199,

Probably better if you start your own thread, less confusion that way.
