You might look into coating the outside with epoxy or polyurethane.

check out this pdf on fiberglass ladders my 6 ladder is shedding and If I Cary it under my arm like I used to my arm feels like I stuck it into a pile of insulation.

For some reason I can not open the ladder file. I have acrobat 7.0 and it has been giving me errors when it tries to upgrade and that link loads and then gives me an error finding file.
I may consider heat shrink, I was just wandering if there was something I did wrong, it is only a year old and wasn't cheap so if I were to buy a new one what should I do to make it last longer. Thanks for the suggestions.

if its only a year old I would complain to greenlee they might do something .
does it stay in the sun ? could it be a UV problem?
I have a fiberglass fish tape that will give me splinters if im not carefull , but thats from where it has rubbed aqgainst conduit edges

As implied above, the gist is that UV and to a lesser extent humidity can cause this surface loosening effect.
If it has been stored out of the sun then I'd suggest you talk to Greenles about's "abnormally short life" and see what they say.

Having a fibreglass kit car, can I recommend waxing with a Car Wax with a UV protector in it. Keeps out any moisture and protects from UV. On top of this it gives it a protective against general wear and tear.
As a sideline do you in the US call it FRP and not GRP (Glass reinforced plastic)?

Rubbing against metal studs seems to cause splintering with mine. A quick rub with some fine sandpaper will knock down any sharp edges.
It takes much longer to smooth using just your bare hands, and it's a lot more painful! Or so I've heard. Yeah. That's the ticket!

The shedding is usually caused from your cutting the tape etc off when using the pole.
What you should do is leave a 'tab' on tape so you can easily get it off.
Since this has not been done a common practice is to get some electrical tape (what ever color you want) and wrap it around the pole.
