Hi, I've got a RAID5 array, on a HP/Compaq server running Server 2003, and I'd like to extend the array. I've added 2 more (identical) disks to the original ones I used when building the server. The server is running Array Config Utility 7.60.18.0 . The config utility can see the 2 new disks and gives me the option to assign them as spares to existing arrays.
I know I'll need to use diskpart.exe to extend the array. What I'm not sure of is what I need to do with the ACU utility first. Do the 2 new disks need to be added as spares or not, before I run diskpart.exe. I've been told to get this done before the holidays, so I don't have much time. I've read the MS stuff on this at: and also the rather frightening I hope the last one won't apply, and only refers to SP1!
If anyone knows the answer to this, or has knowledge of the ACU, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks in advance

Unless you have a VERY early RAID controller it should give you the option to add the disks to the array and extend the logical drive.

Been a while since I've done it though and mind is full of exam stuff at the moment.

You might want to check out similar threads in the HP and Compaq servers forums or post there.

Actually if you don't have Battery Backed Write Cache on the RAID controller you may not get the option either.

You should be able to go into the ACU and add the new disks to the existing logical volume. The server should then proceed to restripe the data across the two new disks and extend the array. It is advisable to do this at a time when the server is not busy and you can do this from either inside Windows or from SmartStart if you plan to have an outage

Once this has been done, you should be able to see the extra diskspace in Windows Disk Management and then extend your partitions as necessary either using DISKPART or a 3rd Party Utility (like Ghost or PowerQuest) depending on your configuration.

My first advice would be to ensure you have a 100% backup prior to starting, just in case...

Thanks for all the tips. I spoke to HP and the firmware on my RAID controller is 3 versions back. I'll try updating that first, and I might get some new options in the ACU utility. I'll do the update tonight if I can.
