Exchange 2000 with Mailsweeper

Running W2K with SP3, E2K with SP3, and all our mail going from firewall to Mailsweeper pc, then to Exchange server. For a couple of days I have noticed in the 'recent messages' on Mailsweeper loads of stuff going from or to (for example) somebody@hotmail or somebody@yahoo.com. The Administrator's mailbox gets approx 10,000 non-deliverables a day for addresses such as .ru, yahoo.com, hotmail.com. How can all these messages be sent through our server when relaying is turned off, and how can I stop it? Help.
