I need to create report in CR8.5. My data source is Excel. I have two questions:

1. What type of data excel return to CR : number or text
2. If it returns a number , how to make it return text because in CR I have to work with strings

Thank you

Excel returns what it believes to be the data type.

One way to assure that it returns strings is to create a false row at the beginning of the spreadsheet that has text in every column.

Keep in mind that CR can convert anything to text (check the totext() function), so this isn't a requirement.

Thank you.

I tried it. It does return me correct data type if data in the entire column had the same data type. In my instance I have combination of numeric, text and alphanumeric characters. Excel returns correct data type if data has the same data tipe as data type in the first row.

Right, so create a false row in Excel to assure proper data typing (Excel will make dangerous assumptions otherwise).

Then just filter the row out in Excel.

Remember, you can change the data types within Crystal using formulas, so this isn't required.
