I have Excel 2003 installed on an XP SP2 client.

In the last few days Excel will not open by double click the file in Windows explorer, file shortcuts etc - you must open it through the application

The file association is setup correctly

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi,
Two things:

Have you re-booted?

What happens when you right-click on the file and select Open?

Tools>Options>General

Untick "Ignore other applications"

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.

This problem has reoccured:

Tools>Options>General

Unticked "Ignore other applications" - still not working

Right clicking file does not open

Tried rebooting - no luck

So it worked and now it doesn't? exactly the same symptoms?

Does the file try to open at all or could it be a file association problem....?

It did work, but the 'ignore other applications' option is still checked

It doesn't appear to be a file association issue and files have the correct Excel icon and correct association in 'File types'

Other symptoms exactly as described above

...well uncheck it then!
