hi!!!!
i am just in process of learning about data ware housing concept and i know some thing about cognos, my question over here is we can build reports are cubes using improptu and transformer, but where does the concept of ETL come, beocs some of resume i had seen says "i used informatica power mart to extract data" why do we need to use this ETL terminology when we build reports or cubes from cognos directly

Cognos has an ETL tool, or data mart creation tool called DecisionStream.

This tool allows you to extract data from an operational database (ERP system) and to transform data and create and load stuctures that are much easier to report from than the operational system.

yeh! i am sorry i did not mention about that erlier , i know about data stream but most of people or using Informatica to extract data, and you said new structures are created and loaded, and reporting is from them you mean creating data ware house, is data ware house and data mart are similar, from under standing so far is that from erp you use etl and create data mart and from data mart create reports or cubes, is it so, please correct me if i am wrong, i am trying to understand the whole concept please dont get me wrong

Hello Rangarao,

I use Powermart from Informatica for about 2 years now to build datamarts based on data from an ERP system, quite to satisfaction. If you have specific questions about the whole process, then send an email (see beneath) and I will take some time to give you a little essay about the proceedings. It is a bit out of context of a technical forum, so I do not want to start a lenghty story here. T. Blom

Hi Rangarao,

DecisionStream from Cognos and Powermart from Informatica are both ETL tools, designed to pull data out of an operational database (designed to optomize data capture and transaction processing) and move it into a data mart / warehouse database (designed to optomize reporting and analysis).

As T. Blom said, we don't want to get into too long of a design philosophy here, but my suggestion is to get Ralph Kimball's book, "The Data Warehouse Toolkit". It does a better job explaining why and how to design warehouses than just about anything else I've seen.

Good luck,
Matt
