DNS is working correctly when I run a nslookup. But when I run commands like ping and telnet, the server cipt0163 cannot find the hostname. It only resolves names in the host file. In AIX, we use a netsvc.conf file... Is there something similar in SUN or is this some other problem...

root@cipt0163 # nslookup paix1
Server: 10.132.108.20
Address: 10.132.108.20#53

Name: paix1.cooperlighting.com
Address: 10.132.105.20

root@cipt0163 # ping paix1
ping: unknown host paix1
root@cipt0163 # telnet paix1
paix1: node name or service name not known
root@cipt0163 # traceroute paix1
traceroute: unknown host paix1
root@cipt0163 # traceroute 10.132.105.20
traceroute to 10.132.105.20 (10.132.105.20), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
1 10.132.100.13 (10.132.100.13) 0.578 ms 0.524 ms 0.462 ms
2 10.132.105.20 (10.132.105.20) 0.202 ms 0.182 ms 0.229 ms
root@cipt0163 # ping 10.132.105.20
10.132.105.20 is alive
root@cipt0163 # nslookup cipt0163
Server: 10.132.108.20
Address: 10.132.108.20#53

Name: cipt0163.ci.root
Address: 10.132.100.236

root@cipt0163 # ping cipt0163.ci.root
ping: unknown host cipt0163.ci.root
root@cipt0163 # ping cipt0163
cipt0163 is alive
root@cipt0163 #

Check your /etc/resolv.conf file. This file has DNS server addresses in it.

check ur /etc/nsswitch.conf for hosts: it should be "files dns
