As I am system admin o HP-UX since 5 years and currently working with SUN OS 5.6 , but confused due to so many versions of sun.. Pl. can any one explain me in brief what is all this version and difference between sunOs & sun solaris..
This is very good site .. do you know more sites likethis .

Pl. help urgently

From an earlier thread (courtesy lorie18):

SunOS 4.1.3 = Solaris 1.1.1
SunOS 4.1.4 = Solaris 1.1.2
SunOS 5.4 = Solaris 2.4
SunOS 5.5 = Solaris 2.5
SunOS 5.6 = Solaris 2.6
SunOS 5.7 = Solaris 2.7

and so on.

There are many sites like this, but none, IMHO as good in terms of user knowledge, response time and general user-friendliness. You could try discussions at:

however. Good luck.

Correction and addition:

SunOS 5.7 = Solaris 7
SunOS 5.8 = Solaris 8
SunOS 5.9 = Solaris 9
(they changed schemes after 2.6)

Also, the 4.x series is more commonly directly referred to as SunOS, which was BSD-based, while Solaris 2.x and up is SysV-based. (in "Solaris", "SunOS" is the kernel, and "Solaris" is the whole system)
