I just got back a while ago from taking the 070-290. I was confident going into the exam, but I guess I wasnt as prepared as I would have liked to be. I was even close 492 out of a possible 700.

This will only make me hungrier to keep at it. I wont let this get to me. I'm on my way to the bookstore right now to re-tool.

Personally, I dont think the 290 is hard. I just didn't know as much as I thought I did. There was nothing on the test that I haven't seen before, except a couple of questions about restoration of a deleted My Documents folder, and you had to restore it with either prior security settings or do not restore security settings ?? I have never seen that.

Everything else was straight forward. I got about 7-8 permissions questions. I would not go in if your're not strong with the whole permissions concept, i.e. share perms vs. NTFS perms, and effective perms, and the concepts in the advanced security settings dialog box etc.

Not too many questions on IIS. I think maybe 2 or 3. One question was you created shared printers and want users to access them by how do you configure IIS to do this?

towards the end I got quite a few backup questions, about 5 or 6. I also got about the same amount in disk concepts, i.e RAID-0, 1,5 and the likes.

Know your Active Directory command line utilities: dsadd, dsquery, dsget. not so much the switches, but what the dsxx does.

I got a number of security auditing through eventvwr questions. One was you have a domain with branch offices in seperate sites. a users account keeps getting locked every week. you suspect someone is trying to breach the domain with that account. How do you set security auditing for this?

I got one SUS simulation question, on how to schedule a syncronization to happen at 2:00am, and configure the server to approve updates before downloading.

I will be ready next time. If anyone one planning on taking the test soon is a little shaky on anything, I suggest you go back to the labs and practice, and study the concepts some more. I know I am.

I meant to say I wasn't even close, 492 out of a possible 700

According to the Progress sheet you receive after the test I was the weakest at Maintaing Physical and logical devices, and at managing and maintaing a server enviroment. I seemed to be strong at Access to resources, and disaster recovery.

Of course this really means nothing because you could only have 3 questions in a particular topic and get 1 of 3 and the computer determines your weak in that area.

Teknoratti,

Thanks for the input. I would agree with you regarding permissions- you need to know them like the back of your hand. This exam was my very first exam and it definitely rocked me. I thought it was relatively difficult due to the breadth of topics covered.

Best wishes on the retake- study hard!

70-290 SUCKS

TOO MANY QUESTIONS - UGH... I DON'T EVEN *WANT* TO KNOW THIS STUFF - BUT MCDBA REQUIRES IT

I AM GOING TO MEMORIZE EVERY ANSWER IN MY UCERTIFY PRACTICE EXAM - THAT'S THE ONLY WAY TO PASS... SAME WITH THE 228 AND 229 - IT REALLY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR ABILITY AS A DBA - JUST YOUR ABILITY TO MEMORIZE THE ANSWERS TO RIDICULOUS QUESTIONS

OK - JUST VENTING

THIS IS A CERTIFIED ORACLE DBA TALKING, HA HA - I NEVER HAD TO STUDY STUPID TEST QUESTIONS FOR ORACLE - THE QUESTIONS WERE ACTUALLY RELATED TO ONE'S JOB, SO IF YOU KNEW YOUR JOB, YOU COULD PASS - NOT SO WITH MICROSOFT
