Deconstructing Carnivale Introduction

Ok, I'm looking to do something in After Effects with a similar concept of that seen in the HBO series' Carnivale's opening introduction.

I know this will require high resolution photographs, 3D layers and lighting, and lots of rendering.

But can anyone give me pointers on how to get started or to even possibly recreate this?
