DDE Alternative

I currently have two applications that need to be able to pass information to each other, such as if the app is open and information about what it has open. I was using the LinkMode settings in a text box but since installing all of the updates for XP, this just seems to hang now. Does anyone know of another way I can communicate information between systems? I thought about using the registry and writing information about the opened system and then the other system can read the registry and see if the other app is open. But if the app crashes then it may not be able to delete the registry entries.

Anyone have any ideas?

that is used for 2 programs to talk to each other by sending strings. This may be of use to you if both systems you mention are of your design.
