Create an Extranet

I have a quick question and wondering if someone can advice.
I started to work with Sharepoint WSS 3.0 and I developed a small site and I would like to add another small, external site for few of our partners; the site should be extranet.company.com
I read around about extending the site and other features but I could not get it to work.
I was wondering if anyone has more information or links where I could read more on how to do this.
