I have a HP 8100 CDRW drive. I just bought new CD-RW media and I can't record to it. I have some old CD-RW media and it works fine. I don't think it's my hardware. The media says it can record from 1x to 4x. I have tried setting the burner to 1x and 2x. Still nothing records. I can't even erase or format. With the old media I can. THe new media is Memorex Platinum. The old media is Verbatim. Have there been any changes to hardware or media over the past few years?

What is the indication that you get?

There are some different media types. Essentially evry recorder should be able to record on any media, but technology changes very fast.

Cleaning the read/write head could help. Recently I was unable to read CD's recorded on a certain media. The CD's werent even detected in my drive. All other media was certainly readable and I had no problems at all. Cleaning the head turned everything back to normal.

Head cleaning is a very simple job - if you know how to (and how not to) do it.

An older recorder will not be able to read or write to newer high speed cd-rw media. Stick with 4X media and you should be OK.
