Count Dates in Excel

I am trying to count dates in 1 Column and put the result in another. When I try =COUNTIF(!$V$2:$V$500,"") I get a rediculous number. Can anyone tell me what I need to put in place of "".

COUNTIF(range, criteria)The COUNTIF function syntax has the following arguments (argument: A value that provides information to an action, an event, a method, a property, a function, or a procedure.):

•range Required. One or more cells to count, including numbers or names, arrays, or references that contain numbers. Blank and text values are ignored.
•criteria Required. A number, expression, cell reference, or text string that defines which cells will be counted. For example, criteria can be expressed as 32, ">32", B4, "apples", or "32".

If you are ONLY counting cells that contain dates, and you only have either a date or nothing in a cell, then
[tt]
=COUNT($V$2:$V$500)
[/tt]
BTW, the formula you posted has an error: NO BANG (!)

SkipVought, There are cells in the column that contains text as well.

It will still work, however I do not recommend mixing text and numeric data. It is a very poor practice, certainly NOT a 'best and accepted' spreadsheet or database practice, and can lead to all kinds of data problems.
