Regular piece of cat 5 will work, but I believe the 28D will have to be set up as an "operator" for the DSS to work. Also, the DSS takes power from the Legend on the 4th pair of wire (usually the brown).
The cord from the MLX phone to the DSS console is a keyed 8-conductor straight-through cable. These are sometimes referred to as blue-tipped cords. If you don't have one of these cords, I have had success in shaving down the edges of a regular 8-conductor connector with a dremel tool to make it fit. No power is needed to connect one DSS as it gets power on the 4th pair as Pepperz stated. When connecting 2 DSS consoles to one phone you need to provide external power on the 4th pair (-48vdc).
