my computer has been intermittently freezing for about a year, with it
progresssively worsening. I have replaced motherboard, memory, and powersupply.
I have reg-cleaned it, and reloaded win98 "in another directory"

now it freezes within 5 minutes, unless it is in safe mode. I have deleted/destroyed
anything that starts up with the computer, so I know the system is running pretty clean.

when in safe mode, it seems very stable.

I am ready to buy a new hard drive. any better ideas?

Could possibly have a bad CPU. What type of motherboard/chipset are you running? Perhaps the latest drivers for it might help. These kinds of problems are common with the Via KT133 chipset...

the CPU is new, the problem was occurring before I got it, it's only gotten worse
with the new one. My motherboard/cpu is a Duron type I believe

If it's a Duron, you're very likely to have a the Via KT133 chipset on your motherboard. Do you still have the box the motherboard came in, or the contact information for the vendor who might be able to tell you this?

yes, I have all that stuff ! darn... Even tho it's the same problem I had before
I installed it...
I will be dead for quite a while, as it was mail order.

If the hardware (mobo & CPU) is different than the type of hardware you previously had installed, then you'll probably have to reload Windows 9x all over again. You can't simply use Windows in a different hardware configuration without reinstalling it.

There are opinions in how to do this, but I feel you should do a "clean" install of windows which involves formatting the hard drive.

I absolutely positively agree that you should format your hard drive and do a clean install. If the problem persists you most likely have a hardware problem.

Good Luck!
