My computer has recently started to freeze during or just after startup even in safe mode.I suspect it may be a hardware fault although all readings are ok with winbond hardware doctor when it eventually keeps running.I would be grateful for any advice

windows98 <-- here's your problem... about as stable as an intensive care unit in a blackout...

however if you are looking for hardware trouble, then it *could* be the ram, try reseating, or replacing...

have you opened up your comp and changed anything, *anything at all* recently?

Hola,

I'm betting more towards the fact that it's 1.) Heat related or 2.) memory related...

Remedy: 1.) open case, clean out all the dust, use a brush and a small vacuum cleaner (or the nozzle of your home vacuum cleaner) to catch the dust as you brush it off, be carefull though not to damage or move parts...

2.) replace ram with a known good working stick or two...

OS wise: RUN SFC from the command prompt (have your WIN98 CD ready) to replace any damaged system files...

@crowley16 - my PC with Win98 ran a hell of lot more stable than the one with WinXP and/or W2k...

Ben

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

Advice:

1. Don't place it on carpet, it can block the air intakes.
2. Don't use a vaccuum unless you know what not to touch with it. Vaccuums create a tonne of static electricity, which is BAD BAD BAD. Go buy a can of compressed air and zap it outside, that's why they sell the stuff :) .. Alternatively, take your computer to the nearest gas station and use their tire pump and blow the heck out of it with that thing, it works great trust me .LOL
