I have a database(backend) that hasn't been compacted and repaired in over a year. When I try and do it now it seems like it gets half way (status bars) and freezes. I've let it run for close to a 24 hr period so I don't think that its a time issue.
Other than that the DB works just fine.
Is there a second party utility that might work better?

Try Decompiling the thing, then recompile and then compact.

( As ALWAYS, take a copy first ! )

I have known that improve things in the past.

To decompile add /decompile after the filename.mdb in the desktop shortcut's target property.

Remove the NOJUNK to use.

Decompiling only works for forms and reports, not on the tables...

Yes FACETS - of course Decompile won't work on BackEnds - because there's not code in a table to 'decompile'

Maybe I'll go back to reading the question more carefully !

Dear Facets,

All the suggestions are good and should help you.

If you still are having problems, here is something else you can try.

1) Let's assume that the database in question can be read ok.
2) Rename the 'Access' mdb to some temporary name.
3) Open Access and create a blank database with the desired name of your backend (what the db in step 2 was originally called)
4) Now, import from the temporary db all the table objects.

That will create a new DB that should be good to go.

Hope This Helps,
