Close/Cancel Current session/connection messages

We are getting users complaining about application performance of an Oracle7-based app.
When using the network sniffer to investigate, we are seeing a very high rate (000's/hour) messages of "close/cancel current connection" messages....

Has anyone seen this, or been able to resolve this???
