We inherited a network, and a Ciscoworks 2000 installation. We were able reset root on the Sun box, but I'm unable to do much with the Cisco works install. I have an account I can log into, and when I looked at logged in users, it says it's got system admin and network admin rights - but I'm unable to use it to add/delete or modify accounts. I need to reset the admin password....is there any way to do this? We have root to the box and console access obviously, as well as the Cisco works media. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Alternatively go to and in the search try ciscoworks 2000 password recovery!

Cut and paste from cisco web site

Step-by-Step Password Recovery Procedure for Resource Manager Essentials
Log in as a privileged user:

root (on Solaris/HP-UX/AIX)
Administrator (on Windows NT/2000)

Stop the Daemon Management process by typing:

c:\net stop crmdmgtd (for Windows NT/2000)
#/etc/init.d/dmgtd stop (for Sun Solaris)
#/sbin/init.d/dmgtd stop (for HP-UX)
#/etc/rc.dmgtd stop (for IBM AIX)

Edit the cwpass password file to change the password for user admin by typing:

For Windows NT/2000

C:\> cd \Program Files\CSCOpx\lib\classpath\com\cisco\nm\cmf\servlet
C:\> edit cwpass

For Solaris/HP-UX/AIX

vi /opt/CSCOpx/lib/classpath/com/cisco/nm/cmf/servlet/cwpass
Below is an example cwpass file:

RME Version 3.2 and earlier RME Version 3.3
admin:22335f595e::::F:: admin:0DPiKuNIrrVmD8IUCuw1hQxNqZc=::::F::
guest:::::0:: guest:HE8Mbri/i78RzCrhzcxcXR86PBY=::::0::

Restart all Daemon processes by typing:

c:\ net stop crmdmgtd (for Windows NT/2000)
# /etc/init.d/dmgtd start (for Sun Solaris)
# /sbin/init.d/dmgtd start (for HP-UX)
# /etc/rc.dmgtd start (for IBM AIX)

The administrator password is now restored to its "admin" default value.

To log in to RME as administrator, use "Name: admin" and "Password: admin".
